Posted by shane On March - 10 - 20104 COMMENTS

Recently, I received an email from a visitor who asked a very simple question:

What is your favorite method to cook grilled cheese sandwiches?

I wanted to reply right away but I did not know how to quickly answer the question. There is not an easy way to do so. Read the rest of this entry »

Staging: Learning the Food Industry From the Inside

Posted by shane On February - 11 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

As I have been writing recently, I am now knee deep into the restaurant industry after leaving my webmaster position. Right now, that simply means me working full-time at the Cafe @ Nordstrom. I am trying to learn as much as I can there as well as gain outside perspectives within the food industry. Last night was my first attempt to truly see a different restaurant from the inside out instead of the outside in. Read the rest of this entry »

A Few Words of Thanks

Posted by shane On January - 7 - 20103 COMMENTS

A week ago Sunday, I decided, last minute, to create a grilled cheese sandwich. With little time and almost no inspiration, I turned to a book called Great Grilled Cheese by Laura Werlin. That is when things changed. That evening, in my opinion, I cooked a great grilled cheese sandwich and took some of the best pictures of my short blogging career. Read the rest of this entry »

My Peppers

Posted by shane On August - 29 - 20091 COMMENT

I thought I would share, with you, some photos of my peppers that are currently growing in our backyard garden. Some of these photos were taken earlier this morning, while the rest were taken sometime this past week. When I have a place of my own, I hope to continue this tradition, with many more fruits, vegetables and herbs. Hopefully, soon, I will be able to pick these guys and enjoy them on one of my newest grilled cheese creations.

These are just basic peppers: Golden Bell, Red, Green and Jalapeño. In the future, I will continue to branch out to the exotic and fancy! :)

I have been trying, not so successfully or hard, to ask the world how they define a grilled cheese sandwich but have had no luck. Now, Serious Eats asks and they seem to have resounding success. Surprised? Nope, neither am I. As their conversation has grown and and grown, and I felt like my voice wouldn’t be heard, I thought I would voice my opinion right here. Plus, I am all for racking up the posts/hits, considering I have had very little posts besides my Sunday Dinners features. Read the rest of this entry »

I Think Today Is Mother’s Day

Mother's Day

I hear that today is Mother’s Day and as a son, I should be doing something special for my mother. That is the yearly ritual, right? As if I don’t appreciate my mom the other 364 days of the year, today I am supposed to make sure I display it overtly so all can see. There are cards/e-cards and gift certificates flowing with customer stricken stores reveling in the new foot traffic. Read the rest of this entry »

An “I Love Grilled Cheese” Request

Posted by shane On May - 6 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Where do you eat grilled cheese?

When I started the I Love Grilled Cheese feature, I thought there would be tons of people to interview, and tons of restuarants doing amazing things with the simple but awesome grilled cheese sandwich. Well, I still think that, I just can’t find them. Googling “grilled cheese restaurant” really yields no usable results. I find that two grilled cheeese restaurants, one in CA and one in NY, have gone out of business. I find CHEDD’s, which I have already interviewed. Melt, check. However, in those results, I don’t see a restaurant that is serving a new grilled cheese sandwich each and everyday, or, a restaurant that is serving a $15 or $30 grilled cheese. I find nothing unique and that is exactly what I want for I Love Grilled Cheese. Read the rest of this entry »

Commenting Guidelines?

Commenting Guidelines

The other day PaniniKathy tweeted about an article on the Food Blog Alliance entitled Comments: how to give as good as you get. It is a great article for blogger and commenter alike. I highly recommend taking two minutes to read it. After reading that article, I thought I would sit down and lay out my thoughts about blog comments.

I haven’t been at the food blogging thing for that long but I have come to one conclusion: I like when bloggers reply to my comment(s) (see: The Daily Spud). It matters to me and I do return to see if the author has acknowledged my reply. I have personally tried to respond to most everyone’s comment on this site even if I do not know if I should be responding. I am not sure if it is too over the top and actually makes my replies disingenuous. It is a conundrum that I hope to decipher.

Most of the replies on this site have been well thought out responses, not one word/one sentence replies. Readers have taken the time to formulate their thoughts so I feel like I owe them a few seconds of my time, just so that they know I have read their comment, by writing a response. If I don’t reply, I worry that people may think that I am ignoring them, which of course I am not.

Therefore, I have decided to write this article and to tell everyone that no matter if I reply or not, I have read your comment and really appreciate them. You took the time to respond to something that I wrote and that is awesome! Thank you. If you have asked a question or prompted me to reply I will definitely do so. However, if I do not really have anything to add, I will not reply, but I am not ignoring you.I just don’t want to bore everyone.

I still believe that my response rate will be up near 95% since I am a nice guy and just like writing long responses to short questions. Please continue to visit and leave comments. I will continue to smile each time I receive one. Thanks!

2009 National Grilled Cheese Month -- April

How did the grilled cheese man not know that April is Grilled Cheese Month?! Readers, you have failed me by not cluing me into this fact. No Sunday Dinners, But Still a Post

Tastespotting "Hearts" Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Because today was a travel day, I was just returning from Chicago, there was no Sunday Dinners. Next week I will return with a special Passover edition, which should be interesting. Even though I wasn’t cooking tonight, I still want to keep everyone posted as to the progress of this site. Plus, I haven’t written since last Sunday evening. That is too long. After awhile, the Internet begins to miss me and my grilled cheese musings! We wouldn’t want that happening. Read the rest of this entry »

The World of Grilled Cheese: How to Monetize It?

When I decided to create a new grilled cheese sandwich each and every Sunday, I stumbled upon something. I found a project that combined all of my loves (photography, cooking, web/design) into one grandiose idea. I had been thinking of how to do that for years and here, out of nowhere, it just popped into my head when I was off in some other world. Amazing.

There is just one problem. Currently, it is just a hobby. There is nothing wrong with that as hobbies are great. I am just wondering how I am able to turn this interest into something that could make me money while still retaining all the fun? Read the rest of this entry »
