Keep Moving Forward

Posted by shane On April - 2 - 20071 COMMENT

NOTE: If you haven’t seen the movie Meet the Robinsons and plan on doing so, it might be best to stop reading, go see the movie, and then return.

When one goes to see an animated movie, one does not expect a life altering experience. However, that is exactly what happened when I went to see Meet the Robinsons last Saturday night. Going in, I wasn’t expecting much (at the time the reviews weren’t that great), however, the minute I left, I was ready to see the movie all over again.

For those of you who haven’t yet seen the movie and don’t plan to, here is a quick review from IMDB.com:

Lewis is a brilliant inventor with a surprising number of clever inventions to his credit. His latest and most ambitious project is the Memory Scanner, a machine that will help him find his birth mother so they can become a family. But before he can find her, his invention is stolen by the dastardly Bowler Hat Guy and his diabolical hat and constant companion, Doris. Lewis has all but given up hope when a mysterious stranger named Wilbur Robinson whisks our bewildered hero away in a time machine and together they team up to track down Bowler Hat Guy in a showdown that ends with an unexpected and unbelievable twist of fate.

Basically the movie is about Lewis, who learns that he must never give up, never let failure come in the way of success. He learns that he must Keep Moving Forward, no matter what. As was said by the man himself, Walt Disney, and shown at the end of the movie:

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

Walt Disney

This quote and the moral of the movie is the reason I have had such an epiphany. I have not been moving forward, instead I have been looking back. I have been too busy worrying about the past, worrying about what I have or haven’t done, instead of looking towards the future. I have not been opening new doors and creating new things. By the time I am looking towards the future, it is too late. The past cannot be changed, only the future.

I was all excited about about updating this blog, and adding my own flair and style. I was all excited about redoing my portfolio site; I even started creating layouts and logos. However, I become frustrated when a task becomes too difficult and I simply become bored. This can’t be. I need to try new things and learn new techniques. I need to follow through on my ideas, no matter how hard it becomes or how frustrated I become. I need to innovate. I need to Keep Moving Forward.

Another example would be my Wii excercises. I was all excited about losing my belly and getting back into shape, but as usual, I simply stopped playing and my belly has stopped shrinking…it might actually be growing again. Why? Simply because I gave up.

I have stopped moving forward. My curiosity has vanished. My motivation has been sucked away.

I need to…

Keep Moving Forward: The future is where the excitement is, not the past. They haven’t yet invented time machines.
